Planning & Organizing Websites
A website as a place to visit -- an environment where rooms (pages) are connected by well marked pathways (links) so a site visitor can confidently explore the space or quickly find his way to a specific destination.
Before a builder begins to dig a foundation or lays the first brick, an architect (and others) must first determine who they are building for, what purpose(s) the building will serve, what they need to consider with regard to accessibility, etc. and provide a detailed blueprint. Before you begin to build your website you will also want a detailed plan.
A typical Web site (or multimedia) project includes the following phases:
- PHASE 1: Defining the Project
PHASE 2: Developing the Site Structure
PHASE 3: Visual Design and Production
PHASE 4: Technical Engineering and QA
PHASE 5: Launch and Beyond
Because these materials are about planning and organizing projects, they will cover only PHASE 1: DEFINING THE PROJECT.
For more information on all of the phases of development listed above, please see our process document.
