Podcasting

« Back to list

In 2005, the New Oxford American Dictionary named “podcast" its Word of the Year. Last year, the number of podcasts surpassed the total number of radio stations worldwide. And today, Northeastern University’s Bouve College of Health Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Computer Science, School of Technological Entrepreneurship, and Office of Alumni Relations feature podcasts with subjects ranging from continuing education for pharmacists to how to apply for a Fulbright award.

The increasing number of podcasts on campus shows no signs of slowing down. Pew Internet Senior Research Specialist Mary Madden attributes the rapid growth of podcasting to its ability to meet users’ demand for entertainment and information on their own terms, noting, “As more Americans become tethered to mobile gadgets and enamored with the ability to time shift and place shift the way they enjoy digital media, the more attractive podcasted content becomes."
